Vector Control Unit

Vector Control Unit, under the Directorate of Public Health Services, Ministry of Health, the Gambia, is mandated to limit or eradicate the mammals, birds, insects or other arthropods (here collectively called "vectors") which transmit disease pathogens.

WHO estimated that the Vector-borne diseases accounts for more than 17% of all infectious diseases Causing economic lose countries and also account for more than 700 000 deaths annually.

They are caused by parasites, bacteria or viruses, which can be prevented using integrated approaches.

Internship for Military Officer at the Vector Control Unit

Vector Control Unit, Under the Directorate of Public Health Services, on Friday the 29th of September 2023, awarded three (3) Military officers from Gambia Armed Forces with certificates who have successfully undergone internship training as Vector control attendants; from December, 2022 to September, 2023. 

This occasion was graced by the Director of Public Health Services, Deputy Director of Public Health Services, Program Manager, Vector Control Unit and other Senior staff from the Directorate of Public Health Services.

The training exposed the interns to activities such as proper usage of chemicals/disinfectants, fumigation techniques, basic maintenance of Knapsack sprayers and disinfection of dead bodies.

The Programme Manager, Mr. Jerreh Camara, elaborated on the commitment and dedication shown by the interns during their internship.

The Director and the Deputy Director of Public Health Services reiterated the importance of collaboration especially in the thematic area of linking Public Health and Security as in the National Action Plan for Health Security in The Gambia.
