DEVELOPMENT OF HEALTH NATIONAL ADAPTATION PLAN, 18 th – 22 nd SEPTEMBER, 2023


Climate Change impacts are felt in many sectors. Health is considered as one of the sectors being highly

vulnerable to climate change. There are increasing evidences on the impacts of climate change on

health outcomes in The Gambia. In order to reduce vulnerability, enhance adaptation measures and

minimize adverse effects of climate change on human health in The Gambia, The Directorate of Public

Health Services, Ministry of Health on 18 th September, 2023, convened 5-day stakeholders retreat at

Kaira Konko, LRR to developed the Health National Adaptation Plan (HNAP). The vision is to develop

climate resilient health system to protect human health from climate change in The Gambia.

The HNAP development was guided by the goal, objectives, and strategies outlined in the World Health

Organization (WHO) Operational framework for building climate-resilient health systems. The

Directorate of Public Health, Ministry of Health led a series of stakeholder consultation meetings with

government ministries, agencies and development partners at all levels for input on the HNAP. In June

2023, the technical working group on HNAP in collaboration with the WHO country office, conducted

two days review and adaptation of HNAP checklist, five days field data collection and analysis, three

days draft report writing, and currently developing the HNAP document which will be validated soon

after

Stakeholders were drawn from Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources,

National Environment Agency, (NEA), National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), Food Safety and

Quality Control Agency (FSQA), National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), Department of

Livestock, Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Water Resources, University of The Gambia,

Directorates and programs under the Ministry of Health. The Ministry of Health sincerely thanked the

WHO Country Office for the Technical and financial support throughout the development process.

Evacuation of a dead body by the seaport public health officers to the Royal Victoria teaching hospital from the ship name  Flipper X ,the Russian nationality.


This good work was  jointly done with seaport public health office and vector control unit (vector attendants)
