BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Directorate of Public Health Services (DPHS) Under the Ministry of Health is mandated to oversee and coordinate preventive health measures, monitor, supervise and manage Public Health Officers and coordinate the implementation of IHR activities at Points of Entry across the country. 

DPHS mobilize resources for programs and foster collaboration with other Agencies, institutions and partners. The directorate consists of four program areas namely: Environmental Health Unit, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Unit, Occupation Health and Safety Unit and the Vector Control Unit.



The Joint External Evaluation (JEE) 2023 exercise will identify gaps to be addressed to further strengthen Nigeria's health security capabilities, through a multisectoral collaboration for a comprehensive and accurate evaluation of our health security systems. 

Directorate of Public Health Services SMT Update, 01.01.2024

The Directorate of Public Health Services (DPHS) conducted its monthly Senior Management meeting which included Program Managers and Heads of Points of Entry (Seaport and Banjul International Airport). The meeting aimed to strengthen collaboration, share information on the program activities, and make informed decisions to improve the quality of public health services. 

From the Office of the Director, a presentation was done to update on coordination roles and plans for the Directorate. Also, Program Managers or representatives presented the various activities implemented during the month of August, 2023. This included the achievements, challenges, and recommendations.

APEHOG MEETS THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES

 

Report: Courtesy Call by APEHOG Executive to Directorate of Public Health Service

 

Purpose of Visit:

The executive members of the Association of Public Health Officers (APEHOG) paid a courtesy visit to the Directorate of Public Health Service to introduce themselves to the director, Dr. Buba Manjang, and to familiarize themselves with the operations of the directorate and the Public Health cadre.

 

Key Issues Discussed:

During the meeting, Mr. Sarja Jarjussey, President of APEHOG, highlighted five key issues of concern to the association:

1. Collaboration with Directorate of Public Health Service: APEHOG expressed its desire to work closely with the Directorate of Public Health Service on various public health initiatives, emphasizing the importance of collaboration for effective outcomes.

2.Meeting with Minister of Health: APEHOG requested assistance from the Director, Dr. Buba Manjang to arrange a meeting with the Hon.  Minister of Health to discuss pertinent public health issues.

3.Progress on Public Health Bill: The association sought updates on the status of the Public Health Bill and expressed keen interest in its advancement.

4. MOU with FSQA:  APEHOG raised concerns regarding the MOU between the MOH and FSQA to strengthening food safety and quality. They expressed interest in establishing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with FSQA to address these concerns.

Resolution of Staff Issues:

APEHOG commended the Directorate of Public Health Service for its prompt resolution of staff-related issues, particularly regarding posting letters and study leave requests. The director assured APEHOG of continued support in this regard.

 

Request for Grant Opportunities:

APEHOG sought the directorate's assistance in establishing connections to access grant opportunities to support their public health initiatives

 

Conclusion:

The courtesy visit served as an excellent platform for APEHOG to establish a relationship with the Directorate of Public Health Service and discuss key issues relevant to public health. Both parties expressed commitment to collaboration and working towards common goals for the betterment of public health.
